If you are an artist looking to add a new dimension to your work, consider experimenting with mixed media. Are you tired of feeling restricted by traditional art forms? 5 big benefits of using mixed media:

1. Creates amazing textures

By incorporating a variety of materials, such as fabric, paper, found objects and paint, artists can add depth and interest to their work. Layering materials and textures can give a piece a tactile quality that draws the viewer in.

2. Allows you to be more expressive in your artwork

By combining different mediums, you can create something unique that reflects your individual style and vision. You can also experiment with different textures and colours, which will give your work added depth and texture. Additionally, because there is no set way to use mixed media, it encourages experimentation and playfulness in the creative process.

3. The freedom of multiple mediums

Not only does mixed media art offer a way of expressing yourself, but it also allows you to embrace imperfection. Instead of striving for perfection in every brush stroke or line, mixed media art encourages artists to let go of their preconceived notions of what art should be and embrace the beauty of mistakes. This process is not only liberation but can help artists find their own artistic voice and style.

Lots of "mistakes" were made while painting these leaves but the painting evolved by layering materials.

4. Personalises your artistic style

With so many materials and techniques available, you can truly create something that's unique to you.

5. Make impressive paintings using cheap or free materials

As long as you have a sturdy support, such as a stretched canvas, canvas board or prepared wood, you can use anything from dried leaves, scrap paper to food colouring to build up the layers of your painting. Just remember to seal your artwork at the end and as you build up layers. Use a fixative spray for pastels and charcoal and a light varnish for textured work so all your layers don't come apart within days!

As you can see, mixed media is an incredibly versatile medium that provides artists with a powerful tool for expressing themselves creatively. Whether you are looking for a new way to express yourself or just want to add some variety into your artwork, consider giving this dynamic medium a try: you won't regret it!
